Backstory
My father was in the army, so growing up I moved a lot. I studied in schools with students from very varied backgrounds. It made me more accepting of people and their circumstances, and my own strengths and weaknesses.
After graduating from engineering school, I chose to join an early-stage company as a developer, where the opportunity to create impact for me was very high. I was a 22 year old traveling across Europe and the US, meeting big customers. It was phenomenal.
I took a break for B-school and then joined McKinsey. A global rotation program led me to spend three years in three continents, giving me exposure to different cultural and social settings. Though my mentors advised me to build out my career in one location, I cared less about outcomes and more about the journey and experiences. That’s been a constant theme in my life.
When the offer came along to become one of the first hires of an early-stage Indian startup it seemed like a perfect next step. The company saw rapid scale. I was running sales for the core product line and managing a 100-plus team – it was a thrilling ride! The experience also gave me a ringside view on how VC firms helped build startups, which eventually led me to Peak XV.
On the lookout for
I am an operator at heart. I love to support founders in their company building journey. I feel the ability to clearly articulate the vision and path to it, is a critical skill for a founder. Having been part of a startup from its early days, I know it’s a tough life. So I get super excited when a founder enables me to dream big with him/her.
I believe every startup is making our country a little bit better with what they do. The services industry created this big push for India in the 90’s and 2000’s, and then telecom in the past decade. I think the next few decades are going to belong to the tech ecosystem – in terms of job and opportunity creation, and uplifting people.
I would love to help at least a few of these companies that go on to build enduring businesses. It’s rare to be part of even one such journey; to help drive impact with several would be an experience of a lifetime.
