“One of the great things about working with founders is they question everything. It forces me to question everything, too. You can’t have lazily-held beliefs around startup founders.”
Backstory
When I left India to work in Silicon Valley in 2003, the engineering talent in India was clearly a step behind the US. When I moved back a decade later, everything had changed. Zynga had hired me to build out their cloud engineering infrastructure, and I originally planned to hire a small, senior team in the US that would oversee a larger, more junior team in India. When I started looking around Bangalore, it was clear that the level of learning had dramatically changed and that engineers in India had gotten really good at building large systems. In the end, I put a significant part of the team in Bangalore – and moved back to India, too.
When I graduated college in 1999, working at a ‘bigco’ and paying your dues was something everyone was expected to do. I joined a startup instead. I went on to work at seven different startups over my engineering career before I joined Sequoia India & Southeast Asia, which became Peak XV Partners in 2023. And now I get to work with and help startup founders everywhere, which I absolutely love.
On the lookout for
I look for founders who want to bend the arc of the universe, who can move past the superficial and think deeply about how this world can change.
When I started in computer engineering 30 years ago, the main focus was to optimize computers, either for scale or cost. The pendulum has swung the other way. Today the focus is on optimizing for developers – to help make them more productive. I’m personally very excited about this. The advent of developer tools means these folks can dream and imagine new things. These tools make it possible for you to think at a very different level of abstraction, and that’s what’s exciting.
When Peak XV partners with deep tech startups, it feels like we’re using a tractor beam to pull things out of the future and into the present. Just look at what’s going on in the quantum computing space right now. Moore’s Law says that computing power doubles every 18 months. But Quantum is bound by Rose’s law, which is an exponentiation of Moore’s law, and argues that growth will accelerate even more significantly in the future. I feel like a kid in a candy store – and I can’t wait to see what comes out of our region.
